Types of monitoring devices

  • Dexcom G6
  • Medtronic Guardian Connect
  • Freestyle Libre 2

Dexcom G6

  • Blood sugar values automatically get pushed to smartphone every 5 minutes
  • Has ability to set alarms for high or low sugars

Medtronic Guardian Connect

  • Medtronic manufactures the glucose monitor in combinbation with their insulin pump called “Minimed” or as a standalone device which is called the “Guardian Connect
  • The Minimed insulin pump has the ability to completely automate basal insulin delivery since it also has an inbuilt continuous glucose monitor
  • Most expensive out of the three

Freestyle Libre

  • Known as a flash sensor
  • Measures every minute
  • The Libre reader which can be the smartphone must be passed over the sensor at least every 8 hours to transfer the data from the glucose monitor to the phone
  • Does not have the ability to set alarms for highs or lows

Freestyle Libre 2

  • Also a flash sensor
  • Has the ability to set low and high blood sugar alarms
  • But can only see the actual value once the smartphone is passed over the sensor
